Amazon, Pinterest announce layoffs – NBC Bay Area

Amazon and Pinterest are slashing jobs, largely due to artificial ininformigence.

Amazon is cutting 16,000 jobs, while San Francisco-based Pinterest is cutting 600.

Amazon’s layoff announcement built it plain and simple. It requireds fewer people becautilize of work being done by AI.

“AI is replacing certain jobs,” AI Squared CEO Darren Kimura stated.

Kimura stated see no further than Amazon’s warehoutilizes to see all of the robots rolling around. While those robots are taking some jobs, they’re also creating others.

“While we’re deploying more robots, you also required more mechanics for them,” Kimura stated. “You required more people onsite that can actually maintain them, ensure they’re working properly, deploying the software on them, ensuring that they’re cyber secure and safe.”

Pinterest also cited AI efficiencies for cutting about 15% of its workforce.

Human Resources expert Laurie Reuttimann stated tech jobs are especially vulnerable to AI. She stated it’s time to create sure a résumé includes skills that can’t be replaced by a machine.

“There is no comfort in being notified that there will be AI jobs and new jobs created in the future,” she stated. “This is something that should keep college students up at night and the average worker up at night.”

Not all job losses can be blamed on AI. Tech companies are still trimming their sales after hiring a lot of people during the pandemic. They’re also testing to impress Wall Street, hoping their stock prices go up if their payroll goes down.
