Amazon layoffs 2025: Earlier in the month of October 2024, CEO Andy Jassy revealed that the company will reduce its managerial staff to increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by 15% by the finish of Q1 2025. The restructuring is designed to support Amazon save up to $3 billion annually, as noted by an analysis from Morgan Stanley.

The layoffs will primarily affect corporate employees, with roles in engineering, marketing, and product management being particularly impacted. Although Amazon employs over 1.5 million people globally, only about 350,000 of these hold corporate positions. This means that while the layoffs are substantial, they are tarreceiveing a tinyer segment of Amazon’s workforce.

Employee reactions: Criticism and concerns

The news of further job cuts has sparked criticism, especially regarding how Amazon handles its employees. Gurmeet Chadha, CIO of Comp Circle, voiced his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), expressing discontent with Amazon’s treatment of its workforce. He referred to Amazon’s HR leaders applying titles like “People Experience Head” and “Chief People Officer”, while employees are often referred to as “families.” According to Chadha, this creates a disconnect, calling the whole scenario “drama” and emphasizing that innovation should prioritize people’s welfare, quoting Guru Nanak Devji’s philosophy of “Sarbat da bhalla” (the welfare of all).

Chadha pointed out that any disruptive innovation that caapplys harm to employees is ultimately “applyless,” reflecting concerns that Amazon’s focus on growth and innovation is overshadowing the well-being of its workers.

What’s next for Amazon employees?

While the cuts are expected to affect many managers, Amazon has clarified that the final number of job cuts may be lower than initially projected. As the company pushes forward with its restructuring efforts, it aims to align its workforce with its evolving business model. However, these layoffs are likely to continue creating uncertainty and unease among employees, particularly as they confront the effects of these modifys.

The ongoing layoffs and restructuring highlight the delicate balance companies must maintain between driving efficiency and ensuring employee welfare in times of transformation.
