Walmart shuts North Carolina hub while expanding Bay Area headquarters

Walmart expands Bay Area office amid corporate shake-up

Walmart, America’s biggest private-sector employer, plans to cut hundreds of roles and shutter its Charlotte, N.C. office as part of a sweeping push to centralize operations in California and Arkansas.

The retail giant will also ask staff based in Hoboken, N.J., and other smaller offices to move to its Sunnyvale headquarters or to Bentonville, Ark. Chief People Officer Donna Morris outlined the changes in an internal memo.

“We are creating these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding,” Morris wrote. “Through this review process, we have eliminated some roles as we streamline how we work.”

The latest consolidation builds on a relocation effort Walmart launched in 2024. That earlier phase already shifted employees from Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto into larger hubs, mainly Bentonville and Hoboken. As a result, the company cut 388 workers at its San Bruno e-commerce facility and another 180 in Sunnyvale.

Walmart declined to say how many employees the newest round affects.

Affected workers have 30 days to decide whether to relocate. Morris said the company will offer support, including moving assistance or severance for those who opt not to transfer.

Meanwhile, the move follows Walmart’s February 2022 decision to bring employees back to the office, citing stronger in-person collaboration. The company’s new 350-acre Bentonville campus anchors that strategy, featuring 12 buildings designed for more than 15,000 staff.

Walmart continues expanding office space in Sunnyvale and Bellevue, Wash., while renovating its Hoboken location.

“Our values and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together,” Morris said.
