Carrigaline has become the first community in Southwest Ireland to launch a direct digital connection to the European Union, giving residents instant access to EU policies, initiatives, and even live answers from officials.
The Europe Direct hub opened at Carrigaline Library, with EU Commissioner Michael McGrath presiding over the ceremony. McGrath, who oversees democracy, justice, the rule of law, and consumer protection, selected Carrigaline as the first location for this initiative in the region.
One of eight such hubs currently operating across Ireland, this facility serves as a central point for conversations about Europe and creates opportunities for local residents to explore how EU decisions shape their daily lives. The center aims to bridge the gap between EU institutions and everyday citizens by offering information on policies, rights, opportunities, and various initiatives.
McGrath emphasized that Europe Direct brings Europe closer to people through reliable information, dialogue opportunities, and helping citizens understand what EU membership actually means for them. He expressed hope that the center would become an inviting and energetic space where people of all generations could examine European issues and recognize how decisions made at EU level affect their lives in Cork.
Students from Carrigaline Community School attended the launch and posed questions directly to the Commissioner. McGrath encouraged them to embrace the hub, calling them the future of an EU he expects will expand in the years ahead. He also noted that the EU is working on legislation to create a safer online environment for minors, acknowledging that current protections fall short.
County Mayor Bernard Moynihan highlighted the timing significance, since Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union this year. He urged people to take advantage of this new resource and participate in upcoming events.
A full calendar of free programming will run throughout the year, including a public speaking competition with European themes, storytelling events, French language classes, and discussions centered on climate action and sustainability. Library staff remain on hand to help visitors navigate additional information and support services.
The hub positions Carrigaline at the center of a growing effort to make EU institutions feel less distant and more connected to local communities across Ireland.
