Pakistan pressed the European Union on trade benefits and regional security during a high-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 21, framing the GSP+ scheme as vital to bilateral economic ties.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar sat down with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. The session took place on the sidelines of the UNGA’s 81st session.
Dar stressed that Islamabad views its relationship with Brussels through a trade and economic lens first. He specifically pointed to the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus, commonly known as GSP+, as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s export framework with the EU bloc.
The conversation then turned toward regional and global flashpoints. Dar credited the European Union for its constructive posture during recent regional tensions, along with its acknowledgment of Pakistan’s push for de-escalation and renewed dialogue.
He urged all parties to return to diplomacy and honor the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in full. Both officials committed to staying in close contact on shared priorities, according to an official readout of the meeting.
