A solo marketing consultant found that optimizing her LinkedIn presence for AI-driven search delivered a 5.1X higher conversion rate than traditional Google organic traffic. Mandy Bray, a case study writer, tested whether answer engine optimization (AEO) on LinkedIn could help her one-person business compete against larger agencies.
The testing window lasted only three weeks, but the outcome pointed toward a significant opportunity.
Research from SEMrush and Meltwater confirms LinkedIn now ranks as the second-most cited source by generative AI platforms, trailing only YouTube. More than 11% of pages referenced by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode originate from the professional network. Google AI Mode alone accounts for 14.3% of all LinkedIn citations. Meltwater’s data reveals that 75% of those citations come from individual profiles rather than company pages, with over half coming from accounts with fewer than 10,000 followers.
Bray’s own results mirrored those findings. After publishing two LinkedIn articles and two posts focused on case study writing, her brand visibility on Gemini climbed to 0.95%. Her citation rate versus competitors jumped from 2% to 5.3%. The biggest win came from Google AI Mode, which recommended her by name when prompted for a case study writer.
Meanwhile, profile views surged over 200% in 28 days. Post impressions grew 237% and engagement increased 340%.
Several strategic takeaways emerged from the experiment. Specialization matters enormously for AEO, since AI systems struggle to categorize generalists. Both branded and unbranded mentions carry value, though the named recommendation remains the gold standard. Claude.ai currently refuses to recommend individual freelancers or solopreneurs entirely. Frequency also plays a role. Three-quarters of authors cited by AI tools posted at least five times in the previous month.
The AI citation lifespan averages just 11 to 15 days. As a result, Bray plans to keep publishing consistently, analyze competitors who rank well, and build service-specific pages on her website for edtech content writing, SaaS case studies, and sales enablement.
