A new layer of shared memory architecture just claimed top honors at one of broadcasting’s biggest stages. The Media eXchange Layer, known as MXL, won the Content Creation category at the IBC 2026 Innovation Awards in Amsterdam on Sunday evening.
The recognition highlights a growing industry push toward software-based media infrastructure. Judges evaluated more than 120 entries and selected 12 finalists, all representing completed projects operating in real production environments rather than theoretical designs.
The European Broadcasting Union originally framed this software transition through its Dynamic Media Facility Reference Architecture. Moving media functions into software solved one problem, but a tougher challenge remained. Once physical cables disappear, how do video, audio, and timed data pass between applications? MXL answers that question using local and remote shared memory instead of streaming encapsulations.
The approach delivers better compute efficiency, reduced infrastructure complexity, and a low-latency foundation essential for live production workloads, including AI-driven applications. MXL does not replace ST 2110 for hardware connections. It targets data exchange within processing clusters.
Released under a permissive open source license, MXL allows any vendor or broadcaster to deploy it without licensing negotiations. Developers build directly on the supplied code rather than interpreting a written specification, an implement-first strategy designed to accelerate interoperability.
Several EBU members flagged media exchange as the primary barrier to cross-vendor compatibility when the DMF vision launched at IBC 2024. Those members included CBC/Radio-Canada, BBC, France Télévisions, SR, SRG SSR, SVT, and VRT. Their input sparked an industry kick-off meeting, followed by collaboration among multiple vendors.
Governance now sits with the Linux Foundation through a partnership with the North American Broadcasters Association. CBC/Radio-Canada provided much of the daily leadership, while Grass Valley, Lawo, and Riedel rank among the largest code contributors. A Requirements Council chaired by EBU and Lawo meets weekly to coordinate direction.
Willem Vermost, senior media technology architect at EBU, credited the collective effort. Felix Poulin of CBC/Radio-Canada emphasized that building openly delivered solutions faster while ensuring every broadcaster benefits equally. Grass Valley’s Vincent Trussart noted that no single vendor can provide end-to-end solutions, making interoperability foundational to operational efficiency.
The win signals momentum for open, collaborative infrastructure standards across the broadcast industry.
