A contract worth hundreds of millions of euros now rests in the hands of a five-year-old startup, a first for Europe. The European Space Agency (ESA) has selected The Exploration Company to push its Nyx spacecraft toward operational status under the ALADDIN autonomous cargo capsule program.
The deal signals a profound shift in how Europe builds space technology. For decades, national agencies dominated orbital transport. Now, public institutions act as anchor customers while private firms shoulder early development risks.
Under the agreement, Nyx will advance through Phase 2 of ALADDIN (Autonomous Logistics and Advanced Delivery of Innovative Networks). The initial mission targets the International Space Station, followed by recurring cargo services to low Earth orbit. Nyx aims to carry scientific experiments, commercial payloads, and infrastructure components using a reusable design.
Hélène Huby, CEO and founder of The Exploration Company, framed the award as evidence of a structural transformation. “We started the development of Nyx with private funding only,” she explained. “We are now at a technical maturity level where ESA and Member States’ public funding can support us massively.”
ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher echoed that sentiment, calling ALADDIN “a large step towards greater autonomy in space.” He pointed to reduced dependence on foreign systems and stronger global competitiveness for European industry.
Meanwhile, Daniel Neuenschwander, ESA’s Director for Human and Robotic Exploration, emphasized the strategic value. The technologies under development “will remain in Europe and support a wide range of strategic industries,” he said.
Few nations possess operational experience returning cargo from orbit. Nyx would place Europe among them. The spacecraft’s reusable architecture positions it as a candidate for future logistics networks serving research platforms, commercial stations, and crewed missions.
As Phase 2 launches, attention turns toward technical milestones. Success could reshape Europe’s role in the expanding orbital services market.
