A European spacecraft developer just secured $450 million to rival SpaceX in the reusable launch market. The Exploration Company, known as TEC, announced the Series C haul this week, calling it the largest funding round of its kind for any European space venture.
The financing arrives as Europe scrambles to close a widening gap in autonomous space access. With fewer domestic launch options and rising competition from American and Chinese players, the continent’s space leaders have pushed hard for sovereign capabilities.
Atomico and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund co-led the investment. Bessemer Venture Partners also participated, with partner Alex Ferrara taking a seat on TEC’s board.
TEC operates across Germany, France, Luxembourg, Spain, and Italy. Its central project, the reusable Nyx capsule, will first haul cargo and eventually carry astronauts. The company targets November 2028 for a mission that docks with the International Space Station and returns safely to Earth.
The order book already looks substantial. Ten Nyx missions have been booked, while total contracts and commitments exceed $2 billion. Institutional customers include the European Space Agency and NASA.
Funding will also flow into the Storm rocket engine program. Chief Executive Hélène Huby acknowledged that building the rocket itself and a dedicated launch pad will require additional capital down the line.
Huby’s engineering team is betting on full-flow staged combustion technology, a notoriously difficult but highly efficient engine cycle. SpaceX and Stoke Space pursue similar designs. A European company has never developed such an engine before, Huby noted.
TEC ultimately plans a rocket larger than Spectrum, the vehicle from Germany’s Isar Aerospace. Huby spent roughly two decades at Airbus and ArianeGroup before leading TEC.
French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen both congratulated the company on its record-setting round. Their attention signals how much political weight now rests on Europe’s commercial space ambitions.
