European Wildfire Zones Could Nearly Triple by 2100 Under High Emissions

Wildfire damage across Europe could nearly triple before 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, according to new research from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

The projection lands as emergency crews battle another brutal fire season. Hotter temperatures, prolonged drought, and stronger winds have already pushed blazes into regions that rarely faced such threats before.

A study published in Global Change Biology projects annual burned areas will grow roughly 39% under aggressive emissions reductions between 2070 and 2100, compared with the 2000 to 2030 baseline. Under a high-emissions pathway, that figure jumps to approximately 192%.

“Climate change is driving up fire activity across Europe as hot, dry and windy conditions become more severe,” said Maik Billing, lead author and researcher at the Potsdam institute.

Even modest warming near 1.8 degrees Celsius would expand burn zones significantly, Billing noted. At roughly 3.6 degrees of warming, fires would multiply across the Mediterranean plus Western and Central Europe, including areas with little fire history.

Researchers from the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research in Frankfurt contributed to the analysis.

The study also examined what better preparation could accomplish. Improved prevention, earlier detection, and stronger firefighting capacity might cut burned areas by 92% under the lower warming trajectory and 72% under the higher one. The authors cautioned those gains may prove optimistic in a much hotter climate.

“We see fire conditions are increasing, so we need to invest more,” said Thomas Hickler, Senckenberg scientist and co-author.

Hickler pointed to firefighter training, equipment, and cross-border coordination as high-impact investments. Yet he warned that extreme fires could eventually overwhelm response capacity, citing the record blazes in France as evidence that past experience no longer predicts future risk.

The warnings coincide with staggering fire losses this summer. By August 12, approximately 550,000 hectares had burned across the European Union, roughly 2.5 times the 20-year average for that date, per the European Forest Fire Information System.

Kirsten Thonicke, another Potsdam co-author, stressed that emissions cuts and local fire management must advance together. Hot, dry, windy conditions already stretch fire crews beyond their limits across France, Spain, and Greece.
