A total solar eclipse will sweep across parts of Europe on Wednesday evening, plunging a corridor of northern and central Spain into near darkness just before sunset. Millions more across the continent will witness a dramatic partial eclipse, with the moon carving a deep bite from the setting sun.
The event marks the first total eclipse visible from mainland Europe in more than two decades. For the United Kingdom, the wait has been even longer. The last comparable spectacle occurred in 1999, when parts of Devon and Cornwall fell within the path of totality.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon drifts directly between Earth and the sun, casting its shadow onto the planet’s surface. Those standing inside the umbra, the darkest part of the shadow, see a total eclipse. Observers in the surrounding penumbra experience only a partial covering.
“The moon and sun have to line up precisely for the moon to fully cover the sun and for you to see a total eclipse,” said Dr Megan Argo, an astrophysicist at the University of Lancashire. She explained that the moon’s tilted orbit prevents it from crossing the sun’s disc during every pass around Earth.
Location determines everything. Totality follows a narrow track across the planet’s surface. In Spain, the eclipse peaks between 20.26 and 20.33 local time, depending on the observer’s position, just minutes before the sun dips below the horizon.
UK viewers will see a striking partial eclipse. According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the event begins in London at 18.17 BST, peaks at 19.13 BST, and concludes by 20.06 BST. Coverage varies by region: Cornwall gets roughly 96 percent, western Scotland about 93 percent, and London around 92 percent.
Dr Carys Herbert, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, recommends finding a clear western horizon. “It will be low on the horizon,” she said. “Anyone wanting to see it should find a spot with a nice view without buildings or trees.”
Eye protection remains non-negotiable. Sunglasses offer zero defense against permanent retinal damage. Specialized eclipse glasses provide the only safe direct viewing method. A pinhole projector made from a colander offers an indirect alternative, casting the eclipse’s image onto paper or card.
Scientists prize eclipses as rare research opportunities. The 1919 eclipse famously confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity when expeditions measured starlight bending around the sun. Modern astronomers use totality to study the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona.
The celestial alignment also sets up a partial lunar eclipse on 28 August, visible in the UK from just after 5.00am BST. Earth’s shadow will tint the moon red, producing what observers call a blood moon. The Perseid meteor shower peaks the following night, giving skywatchers two consecutive evenings of cosmic activity.
