Meet the photonics scaleups building tomorrow

A quiet revolution in light-powered computing is reshaping Europe’s industrial future. Deep tech firms across the continent now convert decades of laboratory breakthroughs into photonics hardware that promises faster networks, fortified cybersecurity, and cleaner energy.

Photonics manipulates light particles to transmit, sense, and process information. The approach outperforms traditional electronics by collapsing size, weight, power draw, and manufacturing costs all at once. As global appetite intensifies for AI infrastructure, high-performance computing, and resilient digital networks, these technologies have become strategic building blocks for economic sovereignty and competitive advantage.

From the Netherlands, EFFECT Photonics packs multiple optical functions onto a single semiconductor chip. Lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and digital signal processors merge into one integrated package, slashing the bulk and expense of data centre and telecom transmission equipment.

French scaleup Cailabs controls laser beams with a proprietary technique called Multi-Plane Light Conversion. The system steers light with surgical precision, yielding more dependable satellite links, stronger fibre-optic capacity, and higher-quality industrial machining for defence and manufacturing customers.

Spanish company Wooptix equips chipmakers with optical metrology tools born from astronomy-grade adaptive optics. Its Wavefront Phase Imaging platform captures wafer shape, nanotopography, and surface roughness in a single snapshot, helping fabs boost yields for advanced packaging and 3D chip architectures.

Ireland’s Mbryonics targets orbit. The company builds laser terminals and photonic integrated circuits that push satellite data rates far beyond radio-frequency limits while shrinking payload mass and power needs. Secure, high-throughput links connect constellations, Earth observation instruments, and deep space missions.

Another Spanish firm, Quside, harnesses quantum randomness to harden encryption. Its quantum random number generators feed genuine unpredictability into data centres, cloud services, and financial trading systems. Single-photon sources under development point toward future quantum computers and sensors.

Greece’s Brite Solar layers nanotechnology onto greenhouse glass. Specialized optical coatings channel photosynthetically active wavelengths to crops while converting leftover sunlight into renewable electricity, cutting both carbon output and energy bills without sacrificing harvests.

These ventures belong to the EIC Scaling Club, a curated network of 120-plus European deep tech scaleups backed by the European Innovation Council and partners including Tech Tour, Bpifrance, and IESE Business School. Their collective trajectory signals a continent determined to turn fundamental physics into market-defining products.
