Qualcomm plans to eliminate 1,258 positions across California, marking one of the chipmaker’s deepest workforce reductions in years. The San Diego based semiconductor giant filed official WARN notices Wednesday, signaling terminations that will hit engineers, vice presidents, and support staff alike.
The timing carries weight. A global smartphone slump has eroded the company’s core revenue stream, even as it pumps resources into next generation wireless technology. Meanwhile, Apple’s aggressive push to build its own cellular modem chips threatens a lucrative partnership that has fueled Qualcomm’s dominance for more than a decade.
Documents submitted to the California Employment Development Department reveal the cuts will split between two major hubs. San Diego absorbs the heaviest blow with 1,064 positions eliminated, while the Bay Area sees 194 workers let go. Pink slips start arriving around December 13.
The Santa Clara notice alone lists more than 150 engineering jobs, including a vice president of engineering. San Diego’s losses span eight vice presidents alongside engineers, business analysts, product managers, and assistants. The company telegraphed this move back in August, when it cited macroeconomic uncertainty in a SEC filing and warned investors that restructuring actions would consist “largely of workforce reductions.”
This latest round follows a May layoff that shed 415 San Diego employees and 84 Bay Area workers. Qualcomm employed roughly 51,000 people as of September 2022, with full timers comprising the vast majority, according to a January SEC filing.
The broader context proves unforgiving. Tech industry downsizing has swept through the sector all year, and Qualcomm faces a double bind: shrinking device demand cutting into chip sales on one side, and a key customer racing toward self sufficiency on the other. Apple’s years long courtroom and public relations battle with Qualcomm now carries a sharper edge as Cupertino inches closer to severing its modem dependency entirely.
For the thousands of workers receiving notices, the holidays will arrive alongside hard conversations about what comes next. For the industry, Qualcomm’s retrenchment raises a pointed question about whether the smartphone era’s most reliable profit engine has finally begun to sputter.
