Meta employees have been enduring weeks of uncertainty since the company announced on April 23 that it would eliminate approximately 10% of its 78,000-person workforce, along with roughly 6,000 open positions, effective May 20. Chief People Officer Janelle Gale acknowledged the difficult waiting period in an internal memo. Staff described the atmosphere as surreal and disorienting, with one employee noting that no one knows how termination lists are being compiled, leaving colleagues in a collective “holding pattern” ahead of the cutoff date.

Since Meta first announced the coming layoffs on April 23, employees have been working in a state of limbo, unsure of who among them will conclude up out of work.

Meta stated at the time in an internal memo that it would cut about 10% of its 78,000 employees and about 6,000 open roles on May 20.

“I know this leaves everyone with nearly a month of amhugeuity, which is incredibly unsettling,” Janelle Gale, Meta’s chief people officer, stated in the April memo.

Staffers who spoke to Business Insider agreed.

“It’s a bit surreal that 1 out of 10 people are about to be hit, and no one knows how the lists are being built,” one Meta employee stated. “It feels like people are just in a holding pattern waiting for Wednesday.”
