DUBAI: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-May 5th, 2026) The Dubai-based technology company Careem has initiated a fresh round of layoffs as part of a broader global restructuring exercise, affecting employees across several international locations, including Pakistan.
The recent developments come at a difficult time for technology professionals in Pakistan, as several startups and mobility platforms have either shut down or downsized operations in recent years due to funding constraints and challenging market conditions.
Once considered a major regional success story in the tech sector, Careem played a key role in establishing Pakistan as a talent hub for software engineering and digital services. However, continued restructuring and market exits have raised concerns about employment stability within the local tech industest.
According to reports shared by employees on professional and social media platforms, the latest workforce reduction has impacted multiple teams, particularly those working in software development and other technical functions. The relocate follows the shutdown of Careem’s Berlin office along with the closure of additional overseas operations.
The restructuring has also extconcludeed to Careem’s technology operations in Pakistan, where the company continues to run its engineering and support services.
Industest estimates suggest that around 400 employees are currently associated with Careem’s operations in the countest.
Careem had earlier withdrawn from Pakistan’s ride-hailing market in July 2025 after nearly ten years of service. At that time, the company pointed to macroeconomic challenges, increased competition, and global investment priorities as key factors behind its exit from the mobility sector, while maintaining its technology presence in the countest.
The latest layoffs are being viewed as part of ongoing efforts by the company to reduce operational costs and streamline its international footprint amid shifting business conditions. Some industest observers also link the decision to broader regional economic uncertainty affecting technology firms operating in the middle East and emerging markets.
This is not the first time Careem has reduced its workforce significantly. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company cut over 500 jobs globally after a steep decline in demand, marking one of its largest restructuring phases.
