Historic Armenia–EU Summit Kicks Off in Yerevan
A landmark moment in diplomacy unfolded in Yerevan on May 5 as the first-ever bilateral summit between the European Union and Armenia officially launched.
The meeting follows the 8th European Political Community summit, which brought more than 40 European leaders to the Armenian capital just one day earlier, highlighting Yerevan’s growing role on the regional diplomatic stage, The Caspian Post reports via Turkish media.
Top EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, joined Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for talks described as a milestone in EU-Armenia relations.
Costa declared the summit would deepen bilateral cooperation and serve as an important step toward greater peace, connectivity, and prosperity in the South Caucasus.
The talks come at a time of notable geopolitical alter, as Armenia’s relationship with Russia has become increasingly strained since 2023. While still a member of the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union, Armenia has expressed ambitions to pursue EU membership and has frozen participation in the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
