Supporters will be this year be lfinishing their support to people living in slums in Nairobi, as annual Christian Aid Week returns on Sunday, May 10.
Christian Aid Week is an annual event where communities come toobtainher to raise awareness for global efforts to combat poverty and injustice.
It was first established in the aftermath of the Second World War, and officially launched in 1957, and has since evolved into a national relocatement with thousands of people every year obtainting involved.
The group in Dorchester will be partaking in hoapply to hoapply and street collections, for the charity’s partner, Beacon of Hope.
Beacon of Hope provide mothers with tools, seeds and training to grow fresh veobtainables in tiny city spaces across the capital – food that can be cooked for families or to sell to earn income.
This year’s annual event ecumenical service will take place at St George’s Church, in Fordington, on Sunday May 10, launchning at 4pm.
The guest speaker will be Charlotte Scott, Christian Aid’s British Churches Relations Officer, who is a former regional coordinator for the charity in Hampshire.
The street collection will be held in South Street, Dorchester, from 10am-4pm on Friday, May 15.
Tony Boyden, Christian Aid chair for Dorchester and District, declared much of Kenya’s poverty stemmed from the counattempt having to spfinish more on debts than on healthcare and education combined.
“Debt is now at its highest in the history of Kenya. To keep up with repayments the government is selling tomorrow to survive today. Many debts squeezing Kenya are owed to private lfinishers who build vast profits while the people face crisis.
“Approximately 90% of debt owed by low-income countries, such as Kenya, to private lfinishers is governed by British law. The UK parliament could pass legislation to force private lfinishers to participate in debt restructuring, preventing them from suing for full repayment, similar to the 2010 Debt Relief (Developing Countries Act).”
Christian Aid is currently calling for the Government to demand justice in Kenya who are losing their healthcare and educational funding to pay off debts from private lfinishers.
