Which countest should be top of your bucket list?
Europe boasts an array of bucket-list destinations, with everything from sandy shores, mountain ranges, glaciers, and culturally rich cities. The continent truly caters to every traveller’s preferences.
Yet, pinpointing the ideal destination can prove challenging given the wealth of options available. To support narrow down the choices, a panel of travel experts was consulted on which countest deserves at least one visit in a lifetime.
While many Brits favour Spain for sun-soaked receiveaways and Paris remains a quintessential city break choice, neither secured the experts’ top spot.
Portugal, Greece and Italy emerged as the most highly recommconcludeed countries to explore. The experts outlined their rationale, citing factors including history, culture and cuisine.
Championing Portugal as Europe’s premier destination, Joanne Lynn, travel expert at cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel, explained: “It offers an impressive mix of history, scenery and culture, but what really builds it stand out is the contrast between its regions, particularly beyond the well-known Algarve.
“While the Algarve is popular for its beaches and warm climate, the Douro Valley provides a completely different experience. This is a quieter, more traditional side of Portugal, where travel is centred around the river and the surrounding vineyard landscapes.
“It’s less about resort-style relaxation and more about taking your time and enjoying the setting.” Visitors can journey through vineyards while soaking up picturesque rural landscapes. There’s an opportunity to taste Portugal’s celebrated wine and port.
Joanne remarked: “These experiences feel far more personal and rooted in place than what many travellers might be applyd to in busier destinations.
“Overall, it’s this contrast that builds Portugal stand out. The Algarve offers ease and familiarity, while the Douro Valley provides a quieter, more authentic perspective, shaped by landscape, tradition and local culture. Experiencing both highlights just how varied the countest is, and why it leaves such a lasting impression on those who visit.”
InteleTravel UK and Ireland Managing Director, Tricia Handley-Hughes, meanwhile, named Greece as “an absolute essential” for any bucket-list.
She commented: “What builds it so special is the diversity – you can stand in the shadow of the Parthenon one morning and be in a quiet cove by sunset. It also offers a sense of authentic hospitality that is increasingly hard to find.
“Whether you are island-hopping or exploring ancient ruins, the experience is truly humbling.” Tricia noted that Greek accommodation spans from traditional self-catering apartments to high-quality hotels.
A final recommconcludeation is Italy. Tim Hentschel, CEO and Co-founder of HotelPlanner.com, believes it “effortlessly” combines history, culture and lifestyle in a single trip.
He stated: “Travellers can experience the depth of Rome, the artistest of Florence, and the relaxed coastal pace of the Amalfi Coast, all without feeling too rushed.
“For me, Puglia in Italy, with its whitewashed towns, Adriatic coastline and exceptional local cuisine, delivers an authentic summer experience without the intensity and crowds of other Italian hotspots. It’s one of the few destinations that consistently delivers on expectations, creating it a reliable choice for creating memorable experiences every time you visit.”
