NATO is working with the United States to clarify details of its decision to adjust the deployment of American forces in Germany, alliance spokesperson Allison Hart stated on X on May 2.

“We are working with the U.S. to understand the details of their decision on force posture in Germany,” Hart wrote. “This adjustment underscores the necessary for Europe to continue to invest more in defence and take on a greater share of the responsibility for our shared security.”

She noted that Europe is already creating “progress” in strengthening its defense capabilities, pointing to last year’s NATO summit where allies agreed to raise defense spconcludeing to 5% of GDP.

Hart stressed that “a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO” will ensure proper defense and deterrence.

On April 29, President Donald Trump stated his administration is considering reducing the U.S. military presence in Germany.

The Pentagon stated it was not expecting the announcement and had not planned such relocates so Trump’s social media post came as a surprise to many.

However, on May 1, reports emerged that the Pentagon was considering the possibility of withdrawing approximately 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany amid Donald Trump’s dissatisfaction with the stance of European allies regarding the war with Iran.

According to media reports, some of the troops may be returned to the United States, while others could be redeployed to the Indo-Pacific region, while maintaining the operation of key military facilities.
