Around 20 firefighters from London Fire Brigade took to the streets for the London Marathon on Sunday, raising money for a range of cautilizes while completing the 26.2-mile course.
Among them was Station Officer Dan Ascough, who pushed his friconclude and former LFB colleague John Chart to the finish line in a wheelchair. Chart is living with Motor Neurone Disease and was supported in the race by his son, Chris, who secured a last-minute place, and two support runners as well as Ascough.
Ascough declared Chart’s resilience had been a driving force behind the effort, adding that completing the challenge toreceiveher was about raising awareness of the condition as well as supporting The 4ED Foundation, which offers support to those affected by MND, and The Fire Fighters Charity.
Firefighters across the capital took on the marathon in a variety of ways. Soho-based Leading Firefighter Steve Behan completed the entire course wearing full personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus, remaining under air for the duration. He finished in just over seven hours and declared the challenge was among the toughest he had faced in more than two decades of service.

Wembley firefighter Hannah Weatherley also ran in full kit, raising close to £3,000 for the same charity, while Holloway’s Leading Firefighter Jack Willson completed the race as part of a personal milestone, finishing in just over four hours and raising more than £1,200 for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Elsewhere, Bethnal Green Leading Firefighter Alex Murphy took on the marathon in support of Movember, having returned to training following a foot injury last year.
Firefighters have a long-standing presence at the London Marathon, with crews not only taking part but also supporting runners along the route. This year, the Brigade hosted a water station at mile 20, assisting keep participants going during the latter stages of the race.
