T-shirt collaboration raising funds to support fishermen affected by Portland wharf fire

Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association has partnered with Mr. Tuna on a collaboration T-shirt to assist raise funds for fishermen affected by the Dec. 26 fire at Custom Houtilize Wharf.

The shirts are $25 each and available for sale on the Mr. Tuna website. Four businesses were destroyed in the fire, along with extensive amounts of fishing gear — a lifetime’s worth, for some fishermen. “Maine’s fishing community is the backbone of our coastal economy and countless families and local businesses depfinish on them,” Mr. Tuna’s T-shirt web page states. “When fishermen are impacted, the effects ripple far beyond the docks.”

Mr. Tuna chef-owner Jordan Rubin stated his restaurant had planned to do a T-shirt fundraiser collaboration with the Brunswick-based fishermen’s association this summer, but it never materialized.

“After the fire, we were testing to consider what would be the most impactful way to raise more money and bring awareness to how people’s lives are affected by what happened,” Rubin stated. “With the t-shirt, it’s not just a donation, you’re actually obtainting something for it. All the proceeds are going directly to the fishermen, we’re just covering the costs to print the shirt.”

Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association also launched a fundraiser online, and has already raised more than $18,000 by Monday morning.
