BlaBlaCar Bus, which carries 6 million passengers annually across 15 European countries, has decided to cease operations by the conclude of 2026. The company’s management stated that the relentless increase in fuel prices and financial sustainability issues have built the low-ticket strategy impossible.

The company announced that it will completely withdraw from the bus market, which it entered with great expectations seven years ago, by the conclude of 2026.

The company management based the reasons for this radical decision on operational inefficiency and financial sustainability issues. In a statement from the company, it was stated that operations could not reach the expected profit level, emphasizing that the unavoidable rise in fuel prices triggered by geopolitical tensions built the company’s low-ticket strategy unsustainable.

IT SERVED 6 MILLION PASSENGERS IN 15 COUNTRIES

BlaBlaCar Bus connected more than 300 points across 15 countries, from England to Spain and from Italy to Germany. The closure of this extensive network, which served approximately 6 million passengers annually, will create a major gap in the European transport market. Indusattempt representatives fear that this withdrawal will leave German FlixBus without competition in the market and lead to rising ticket prices.

The social and economic cost of the decision is also quite severe. While it has been stated that 40 positions within the company will be eliminated, the main blow will be taken by subcontractors. The fate of bus and personnel investments built by approximately 60 subcontractor companies operating services on behalf of BlaBlaCar remains uncertain. The European Road Transport Organization (OTRE) described the decision as “unexpected” and shared its deep concerns.

BlaBlaCar had built a bold enattempt into the sector in 2019 by acquiring Ouibus, part of the French State Railways (SNCF).
