Greece has emerged as one of the European Union’s leading electricity exporters, marking a significant shift from its position as a net importer just a few years ago, Deputy Environment and Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos declared.
Speaking on recent developments in the energy sector, Tsafos noted that in the first quarter of 2026, Greece ranked among the EU’s top electricity exporters, behind countries such as France, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2019, by contrast, the counattempt was among the bloc’s largest importers.
A key driver behind this turnaround is the rapid expansion of renewable energy production, particularly from wind power, which has strengthened the counattempt’s energy autonomy and competitiveness.
At the same time, wholesale electricity prices in Greece remain lower than in much of Central and Southeastern Europe, without, for now, raising concerns for the retail market.

Beyond electricity, Greece is also reinforcing its position in the natural gas market. In 2025, gas inflows reached 17.7 billion cubic meters, while exports rose to 11 billion cubic meters, mainly directed to Italy and countries in Southeastern Europe. This marks a significant increase from 2020, when gas exports were effectively zero.
International gas prices have remained relatively stable, ranging between 45 and 50 euros per megawatt-hour, well below the levels recorded during the energy crisis.
The European Union’s gradual shift away from Russian natural gas by 2027 is expected to create new geopolitical and energy opportunities for Greece, further enhancing its role as a regional energy hub.
