In the early hours of Saturday, an arson attack was carried out on the private home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect shortly afterward, who subsequently also threatened OpenAI’s headquarters. Altman himself responded with an unusually personal blog post.
The Attack and the Arrest
At approximately 4:12 a.m. local time, the San Francisco Police Department responded to a reported fire at Altman’s residence. Investigators determined that an unknown man had thrown an incconcludeiary device — described as a Molotov cocktail or similar explosive — at an exterior gate of the hoapply. The device bounced off the hoapply, set the gate on fire, and the perpetrator fled the scene. No one was injured.
Shortly afterward, the same suspect was apprehconcludeed near OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco, where he had reportedly threatened to set the building on fire. Officers recognized him as the same man from the earlier incident and arrested him. Police did not release the suspect’s name but described him as a 20-year-old man. Charges are still pconcludeing and the investigation is ongoing.
OpenAI’s Response
“Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and threatened our headquarters in San Francisco. Fortunately, no one was injured. We are very grateful to the SFPD for their swift response and the city’s support in ensuring the safety of our employees.”
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the incident to the news outlet Decrypt in these words. The company also stated that it is actively supporting law enforcement in their investigation.
Altman’s Blog Post: Anger, Reflection, and Convictions
Sam Altman spoke out that same night with an unusually candid blog post. He wrote that he was awake in the middle of the night and angry, and that he had previously underestimated the power of words and narratives. Shortly before the attack, an article about him had appeared that he considered inflammatory, and someone had pointed out its potential danger to him. He had dismissed it at the time.
Altman currently writes of a “time of great concern regarding AI.”

The Attack in the Context of a Growing Threat Landscape
The incident is part of a series of threats linked to AI development. In the U.S. state of Indiana, shots were recently fired at the home of a city council member who had supported the construction of a data center. A note reading “No data centers” was left at the scene. As early as November 2025, OpenAI had been forced to lock down its San Francisco offices following a violent threat from an AI activist.
