WATERBURY — Eversource Energy’s cancelation of a contract will result in the layoff of 37 workers in Waterbury, according to a notice filed with the Connecticut Department of Labor.
Feeney Bros. Excavation, which has a facility in Waterbury at 137 East Aurora St., notified the workers on Tuesday, according to a letter sent to the labor commissioner Dante Bartolomeo from Bryan Grassing, a human resource official with Artera Services, the Atlanta-based corporate parent of Feeney Bros.
The workers will be laid off between now and the conclude of July, Grassing stated in his letter to the labor department.
“Feeney Bros. was unable to provide more notice of this action becautilize these circumstance were not foreseeable,” Grassing’s letter read, in part. “Feeney Bros. understood Eversource would continue working with it in some capacity. On April 9 Eversource, one of Feeney Bros.’ largest clients, terminated its contract effective immediately.”
Grassing’s letter indicated that Feeney Bros. might announce additional layoffs in the coming months.
“Once additional employees are identified, those employees are expected to be separated from employment, launchning on or about April 25 with all separations expected to be accomplished by July 31, 2025.”
Grassing was not available for comment on the layoffs on Thursday. Tricia Modifica, an Eversource Energy spokesperson, stated the company “created a business decision to shift on from Feeney Bros.”
“We don’t believe it would be appropriate to comment further at this point,” Modifica stated.
The state labor department filing displays that the layoffs will not result in Feeney Bros. closing the company’s Waterbury location.
