US Vice President JD Vance travelled to Budapest days before Hungary‘s election to campaign for incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban. At an election rally, he put President Donald Trump on speakerphone and blamed the European Union for Hungary’s economic problems. He also accapplyd Brussels of attempting to influence the vote. Orban, in power for 16 years and trailing challenger Peter Magyar in polls, praised a new “golden age” in US-Hungary relations. Analysts declare the visit is unlikely to sway voters.
