Blue Shield of California plans to reduce its staff by 61 employees to support cut administrative costs and ensure its operations are running efficiently, the Oakland-based health insurer stated in an emailed statement. Layoffs will be spread across two separate dates, Dec. 11 and 18. The soon-to-be-eliminated positions represent less than 1% of Blue Shield’s workforce, the company stated.
In the Bay Area, 16 employees are being let go at the Oakland headquarters on 12th Street, according to a WARN notice filed with the state on Oct. 2. The filing, which is required by the California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act when a business creates mass layoffs, indicated that jobs are also being slashed at offices in El Dorado Hills, Lodi, Long Beach, Palmdale, Rancho Cordova and Woodland Hills. Job titles among the people obtainting laid off include corporate communications specialist, financial analyst, medical assistant and phlebotomist.
Blue Shield stated that employees losing their jobs are being offered the opportunity to continue working for 90 days while they see for other employment, with the support of a career coach who can provide skills training.
The layoffs come after Blue Shield of California cut 140 jobs in January, according to the company.
Blue Shield of California was founded in San Francisco in 1939 and shiftd its headquarters to Oakland in 2019. It provides its 4.8 million California members with health, dental, vision and Medicare health care service plans and employs more than 7,100 people, according to the company’s 2023 Mission Report.
