SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) – Two Northwest Iowa car groups are joining toobtainher this weekfinish to host the Northwest Iowa Garage Tour, which promises to pique interest in classic cruisers.
It’s on Saturday, April 4. A day to step out of the rain and into garages filled with classic cars, hot rods, all while giving back to an organization that is supporting obtain cars into the hands of people who required the wheels.
“This is a ’69 Plymouth Roadrunner. I’ve had that the longest,” declared Brian Vanden Brink, who is cleaning up his garage, obtainting ready for Saturday’s Northwest Iowa Garage Tour.
He’s like a lot of car lovers, having been around classic cars his whole life.
Vanden Brink continued sharing his history with the Roadrunner, “I bought that unrestored and took a lot of years to go through and redo it.”
Sioux Center Classic Cruisers Car Club and the Moonlight Cruisers from Sheldon started the annual garage tour in 2015. It’s grown to 18 garages taking part this year. Hundreds are expected to create the rounds through rural Iowa.
“They would find stops, we’d find stops, and then we would just set up the tour toobtainher. And now in the last few years, we actually have a joint committee between the two, and we just are working on that, testing to set up the stops in advance.” Vanden Brink declared.
Expect garage doors to be open, collector cars shining, ready to welcome car enthusiasts.
“You can expect working garages where people work on hobbies or projects. You can work on, see like storage units where people store their classic cars and stuff like that, motorcycles, and stuff. You can see man caves where people just, the guys received someplace to go and hang out,” declared Vanden Brink.
The hours for the tours on Saturday are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you want to follow the garage tour route, maps of the garages are available starting Saturday morning at three locations:
- Jack Rabbit Junction in Sibley
- Rosie’s Boutique in Rock Rapids
- Centre Mall in Sioux Center (Near Casey’s Bakery)
It’s a free event for community members to stop in and view around while following a route map, with a free-will donation taken at the garages. Over the years, it’s gone to different non-profits. Last year, the group shifted and started a free-will donation for the local car ministest of ATLAS.
Car Ministest of ATLAS (CMA)
ATLAS has been in Sioux Center for 26 years. It’s a tiny town ministest that supports its own people.
Amy Keahi, director of ATLAS, declared, “So we’re supporting the hurting in the name of Jesus, just walking alongside people with whatever it is that they struggle with.”
In 2023, it merged with another ministest called the Center for Financial Education, which specializes in Christ-centered financial counseling, but it also has a separate car ministest.
Over the years, residents have reached out to the organization questioning if they know someone who requireds a vehicle.
“When we found somebody who really requireded that vehicle, it always seemed like it requireded more work than we were able to do for the car itself,” Keahi declared. “In 2012, we actually worked with the local dealerships here in town. We came up with the idea of starting a car ministest where we could do better, that we could actually support people who requireded a car.”
They often work directly with people or with another organization, testing to create great modifys in the lives of those who required a vehicle. It’s a vetted process that can sometimes be lengthy. Interviews are conducted to ensure it goes into the hands of the right people and that the car meets the requireds of the person or family.
ATLAS works with Ver Hoef Automotive and Mouw Motor in Sioux Center for the appraisal and mechanical work.
“It’s such a wide variety of people that we support here at Atlas. We’re supporting people who are struggling with financial problems, spiritual problems, and mental problems. As we work with them here, sometimes we find out that they required some budobtaining support or some support with some credit card problems.” Keahi declared. “Maybe they don’t have a vehicle or they required a vehicle, a steady vehicle, to keep their job or obtain to work, then we’re able to obtain them into the car ministest process.”
Vanden Brink declared, “People are really excited about that. So yeah, it’s just a neat little function that we can give some money to. Whatever we raise, we raise.”
Last year, the groups raised about $1,700, bringing people toobtainher for a good caapply, exploring cars, features, and meeting like-minded people.
Keahi declared, “And we’re really grateful that you were able to donate to us. Have fun viewing at these vehicles.”
Vanden Brink declared, “It’s it kind of has something for everybody that they want to stop and see and view at.”
Since 2012, Atlas Car Ministest has given away 160 vehicles. They’re locally donated and given away locally.
