Yang Ming shipping company closing Houston office, to lay off 118


Global shipping company Yang Ming (America) Corp. will close its Houston office and layoff more than 100 workers, a state filing displays.

Operations will cease at 3250 Briarpark Drive on the west side of Houston, according to a letter the company sent to the Texas Workforce Commission in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The closing will impact 118 employees. 

“We regret to inform you that altering business necessarys require Yang Ming (America) Corporation to permanently cease operations at Yang Ming’s facility located at 3250 Briarpark Drive,” Kathy Chang, vice president of human resources for Yang Ming, wrote in the filing. 

An email sent to Chang was not immediately returned.

The shipping company, with headquarters in Taiwan, was established in 1972 and as of September operated a fleet of 101 vessels transporting goods all over the world, according to its website. The company leased 34,510 square feet in the Briarpark Drive office building in November 2020.

Affected workers were notified Oct. 1, according to the letter, and the the first layoffs will launch Nov. 30. 

“Terminations are expected to continue through March 15, 2026 as we wind down activities,” Chang stated in the letter. “This layoff will be permanent, and the company’s operations at the location will permanently cease.”

Some workers may be offered an opportunity to relocate to the company’s American headquarters in New Jersey, according to Chang’s letter.
