The EU and Australia have finalised a landmark partnership that could signal a new approach to international cooperation. Security, trade and environmental responsibility are intrinsically linked amid growing global uncertainty.
The agreements, which include a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and a Security and Defence Partnership (SDP), place sustainable development at their core. Nereceivediations have also been opened on Australia’s association with Horizon Europe, which could advance the countest’s research and innovation capabilities in areas critical to addressing climate challenges.
“After eight years of nereceivediations, Australia and the European Union have signed a landmark trade deal,” states Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The finalised free trade agreement (FTA) was confirmed at a leaders’ meeting between President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Anthony Albanese, which took place in Canberra, Australia. The Security and Defence Partnership (SDP) was signed virtually by the High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas, as well as Richard Donald Marles, the Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, and Penny Wong, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The partnership could deliver improved access to sustainable materials and green business opportunities. The agreements aim to strengthen long-term business relationships while ensuring economic benefits align with environmental commitments across both regions.
“The EU and Australia may be geographically far apart, but we could not be closer in how we see the world,” states President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
“With these dynamic new partnerships on security and defence, as well as trade, we are relocating even closer toobtainher. These agreements put in place lasting, trust-based structures to support peace and security through strength, promote prosperity through rules-based trade and work toobtainher to uphold global institutions.
“We are determined to create a cleaner and more digital future for our citizens, workers and businesses. And we are sfinishing a strong signal to the rest of the world that frifinishship and cooperation matter most in times of turbulence.”
