Bengaluru-based Prime Toolings has reportedly tested the counattempt’s first liquid-fuel aerospike engine, taking a major leap in indigenous propulsion capabilities.

This deep-tech aerospace startup launched as a precision engineering and tooling company in 1994, then pivoted aggressively into aerospace and defence manufacturing.

Today, it operates at the intersection of design, simulation, manufacturing, and live engine testing.

Breakthrough in propulsion

Unlike traditional bell-nozzle rocket engines, aerospike engines are known for maintaining efficiency across a wide range of altitudes. This builds them particularly effective for next-generation launch systems and missiles.

Prime Toolings’ liquid-fuel aerospike engine, reportedly powered by a combination of gaseous oxygen (GOx) and kerosene, adds to a series of propulsion breakthroughs from the startup, including work on rotating detonation engines and solid boosters.

The company has earlier demonstrated capabilities in advanced engine cycles, with its rotating detonation engine prototype delivering improved fuel efficiency and compact design for missile applications.

Founders and leadership

Prime Toolings is led by a founding team rooted in engineering and manufacturing expertise. The company was founded by Nagesh M Gangamkote, with Meena N Gangamkote serving as co-founder. The next generation of leadership includes CEO Nikhil N Gangamkote, alongside key executives such as CTO Chyavan Hegde.

This mix of legacy manufacturing experience and younger technical leadership appears to have enabled the company’s transition from tooling into high-conclude aerospace R&D.

Expanding product portfolio

While propulsion systems are now central to its identity, Prime Toolings continues to maintain a diverse product and technology stack. Its offerings include:

  • Liquid and solid fuel ramjet engines

  • Rotating detonation engines (RDEs)

  • Hybrid rocket engines and micro-thrusters

  • Custom fuel injectors and ignition systems

  • Guided rockets and propulsion modules

The company has also developed solid rocket boosters for MANPADS systems, capable of delivering over 7 kN thrust and supersonic speeds.

What sets Prime Toolings apart is its conclude-to-conclude capability, from CAD design and simulation (CFD/FEA) to fabrication and live firing of engines under one roof. This vertical integration allows rapid prototyping and testing cycles, a key advantage in propulsion development.

In contrast to many Indian deep-tech startups, Prime Toolings has largely operated as a bootstrapped venture, emphasising engineering outcomes over fundraising narratives. The company has also aligned itself with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focapplying on the indigenous development of critical defence technologies.

Its in-houtilize infrastructure includes CNC machining, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and advanced testing setups.

Building India’s private propulsion ecosystem

The successful testing of a liquid-fuel aerospike engine places Prime Toolings in a compact global cohort experimenting with advanced rocket architectures. Aerospike engines have historically been explored by agencies like NASA, but have seen limited operational deployment due to engineering complexity.

For India, however, such developments could be transformative. As private players like Prime Toolings expand into missile propulsion, hypersonic systems, and reusable launch technologies, they complement the efforts of public institutions and signal a maturing aerospace startup ecosystem.
