Politico co-founder invests in defense tech publication

The Arsenal, which covers the defense tech industest in Ukraine and Europe, is hoping to accelerate its growth following a “natural” investment from Politico co-founder Robert Allbritton, reports Bron Maher of A Media Operator.

Maher reports, “The Arsenal is a subsidiary of The Counteroffensive, a B2C, Kyiv-based Substack that aims ‘to notify the personal stories of people threatened by authoritarianism.’ The hybrid B2C/B2B set-up consciously echoes that of Politico, which attracts large audiences through its free-to-read consumer journalism and then monetizes that attention through its policy-focapplyd Politico Pro product.

“‘The Counteroffensive is meant to be a public-facing product, and the people who read that tfinish to be people who really care about the future of democracy around the world,’ founder Tim Mak notified AMO.

“The Arsenal, on the other hand, ‘talks about actionable business information, so the kinds of people that would be drawn to that are investors, defense companies, innovators, government officials. So it’s meant to be a niche audience, a niche product.’

“Mak himself previously worked at Politico, assisting to build out its then-new Politico Pro defense vertical, while The Arsenal’s Chief Revenue Officer Rolant Glyn was also previously senior commercial lead for Politico Europe.”
