Medical robot manufacturer Intuitive Surgical could lay off up to 331 workers at its Sunnyvale headquarters complex, according to a state filing last week.
The Santa Clara-based company is cutting jobs by the conclude of October at 1050 Kifer Road, next to its main headquarters building at 1020 Kifer Road. Intuitive cited stopping operations for graveyard and weekconclude shifts in one of its production divisions as the reason for the layoffs.
The company declared it would encourage the affected employees to apply for open roles, which could lower the final layoff figure. The cuts are out of a total workforce of 15,638 employees as of last year.
Intuitive didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Affected employees include up to 212 assembly technicians, 26 manufacturing leaders, 22 trainers and 22 material handlers.
Medical device and biotech companies have been hit hard by layoffs following an indusattempt slowdown after the pandemic. In the Bay Area, Gilead, Roche and Cargo Therapeutics have collectively cut hundreds of jobs this year.
Intuitive was founded in 1995 and is known for its da Vinci Surgical System, which assists doctors in minimally invasive procedures including prostate removals, hysterectomies and heart valve repairs. The company reported 10,488 installed da Vinci systems at the conclude of June.
The company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.44 billion, up 21% compared to the prior year. Net income in the second quarter was $658 million, up from $527 million in the second quarter of 2024. The results beat analyst forecasts compiled by Zacks Investment Research.
Shares of Intuitive were up 1.2% in Tuesday trading, for a market capitalization of $172 billion.
