Company cuts 16k, shuts Go and Fresh, adds Whole Foods


This new round of layoffs was a way to “strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership, and reshifting bureaucracy,” Amazon senior vice president Beth Galetti declared in a message to employees that was shared on the company’s news site. Amazon is giving employees 90 days to view for a new role internally, the announcement states.

Galetti referred to the reductions as part of organizational modifys being built across the company.

“While we’re creating these modifys, we’ll also continue hiring and investing in strategic areas and functions that are critical to our future. We’re still in the early stages of building every one of our businesses and there’s significant opportunity ahead,” she declared in the announcement. 

The reductions come on the heels of Amazon announcing it would close all its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores to build on its Texas-headquartered Whole Foods Market brand, which the company acquired in 2017. 

All 57 of the Amazon-brand brick and mortar stores will shut down, and Amazon will open 100 Whole Foods stores in the next several years, the company declared in a Tuesday statement.

Some of the stores will be converted to Whole Foods Market locations, and in addition the company declared it was expanding its Same-Day Delivery services while building on a newer format, Whole Foods Market Daily Shop.

The daily shop format is built around a tinyer store concept to offer customers a more convenient experience with “grab-and-go” meals, coffee and daily essentials, according to the company’s statement.

Amazon’s Same-Day Delivery services were introduced in 2025 and expanded on the Whole Foods Market concept of offering fresh food produce, dairy products, meats, baked foods and frozen goods in addition to Amazon products such as electronics and various hoapplyhold items, according to the company.

The company declared the relocate is a shift in its focus to expand its physical retail with the tinyer formatted shops and that its previous “large-scale” branded stores had met expectations.  

“We haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model necessaryed for large-scale expansion,” the company declared of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh shops.
