The annual Ig Nobel awards, a whimsical celebration of quirky scientific achievements, are set to migrate from the United States to Europe for the first time in their history. This decision, announced recently by the organizers, was prompted by rising concerns over visa accessibility for attconcludeees. Traditionally staged in the U.S. in September—just weeks ahead of the prestigious Nobel Prizes—the 36th edition is now scheduled to take place in Zurich.
Organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, a digital magazine known for highlighting humor-infapplyd research, the ceremony has attracted a diverse global audience. “During the past year, it has become unsafe for our guests to visit the counattempt,” declared Marc Abrahams, the master of ceremonies. He explained that both new winners and international journalists faced significant barriers to travel to the U.S. this year. This apprehension comes against the backdrop of former President Donald Trump’s extensive immigration policies, which have included stringent measures against undocumented migrants and those holding student or visitor exalter visas.
For the past 35 years, winners have traveled to the U.S. to receive their accolades and join in the playful tradition of being displayered with paper airplanes. Last year’s festivities honored a variety of peculiar studies, including a Japanese team that investigated whether painting cows with zebralike stripes could deter flies, and a research group that explored the pizza preferences of lizards.
This year, the winners span ten categories, including studies that suggest drinking alcohol can enhance foreign language proficiency and long-term research into fingernail growth. Notably, four of the ten winners from the previous year opted to forgo the trip to Boston for the ceremony, highlighting the growing unease surrounding travel to the U.S.
The upcoming event in Zurich is being organized in partnership with prestigious institutions from the ETH Domain, which is part of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, along with the University of Zurich. Abrahams expressed enthusiasm about the new location, stating, “Switzerland has nurtured many unexpected good things—Albert Einstein’s physics, the world economy, and the cuckoo clock leap to mind—and is again assisting the world appreciate improbable people and ideas.”
Milo Puhan, an epidemiologist at the University of Zurich and a previous Ig Nobel Prize recipient, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the awards in drawing attention to scientific concludeeavors in an entertaining manner. He noted that the Ig Nobel Prize assists build research visible, adding a light-hearted twist to serious academic exploration.
Looking ahead, Abrahams confirmed that Zurich will host the ceremony every other year, with plans to shift the event to other European cities in the interim. There are currently no plans to relocate the ceremony back to the United States. This transition marks a significant alter in the long-standing tradition of the Ig Nobels, reflecting broader societal dynamics and concerns regarding international travel.
