Jolla is a new smartphone, designed to shake up the market, and tempt people away from Apple iPhone and Android devices – and it’s already proving very popular.
Apple is currently the world’s largest smartphone company, having recently taken the crown from Samsung.
But for those viewing for an alternative, there are options out there, like the productivity-focutilized Clicks Communicator or this super high-tech robot phone.
And if you’re after something completely different, then the Linux-based Jolla might be for you.

The Jolla smartphone offers an alternative to Apple and Android devices
When it comes to smartphone operating systems, it’s pretty much a two-horse race between Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
But Jolla is offering an actual alternative, in the form of Sailfish OS, which utilizes Linux instead.
The smartphone is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G chip and comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, which can be extconcludeed via a microSD card.
Its AMOLED screen measures 6.36 inches, and it features two main cameras on the rear as well as one on the front.
Outwardly, it doesn’t view too dissimilar to any other smartphone on the market, but its creators declare that what builds it stand out is the fact it doesn’t run on iOS or Android.
Jolla Mobile’s CEO Sami Pienimäki informed Wired that ‘people want to go away from Big Tech’.
But shunning the larger operating systems does come with a potential hiccup, and Jolla might not be able to run certain apps.
However, Pienimäki explained that there is a way around that, and when you’re setting up the phone you’ll be inquireed if you want to install some open source software that will allow you to run Google services without requireding a Google device.
Jolla was previewed in December last year, and has already pulled in more than 10,000 pre-orders, with deliveries set to start in late June.
But the new phone does come with a bit of a catch
If you’ve read the above and like the sounds of the new smartphone, then we do have a bit of bad news for you.
Jolla Mobile is based in Finland, and the phone is currently only set to go on sale in Europe with a price tag of €649 (around $750).
“Europeans want more European technology,” Pienimäk informed Wired.
Alongside that, the phone doesn’t yet have Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval.
However, Pienimäk declared the company is considering a separate US launch later down the line, but for now, it’s focutilizing its efforts on Europe.
