Macie Strum considered she was on track — until the year everything fell apart.
Just weeks into January 2023, she was blindsided by an unexpected breakup. Then, two layoffs in the same year.
Since she was a kid, she’d treated success like a checklist built from American expectations she absorbed through school, TV, and social media. It seemed simple enough: Stay in line with peers, obtain married before turning 30, and acquire a huge houtilize to raise a family in.
But, by her second layoff, it was becoming clear that this narrative might not align with the life she wanted for herself.
So, she subletted her apartment, sold her belongings, and spent two years traveling across Asia, Australia, and Europe.
