French airports call for suspension of EES rollout to avoid ‘risky’ summer travel chaos


Transport organisations are urgently calling for measures to prevent the EU’s new Enattempt/Exit System (EES) from caapplying summer travel chaos.

The full rollout of the bloc’s new border controls is due to come into force on 10 April 2026.

The European Commission has already announced it will allow member states “certain flexibilities” that will assist ease potential congestion during peak traffic periods until September.

Authorities at France’s two largest airports are now requesting a suspension of the EES rollout over the summer.

It comes after air transport organisations warned that waiting times may be significantly longer this summer with the biometric system in place.

They are calling for urgent action to combat “chronic border control understaffing” and “unresolved technology issues”.

Lisbon Airport suspfinishs EES after excessive delays

The EES launched in October 2025 and is gradually being implemented at the bloc’s airports and ports.

At airports where the system is operational, visa-exempt travellers from the UK, US and other non-EU countries must register their biometric data at dedicated kiosks.

Initially, the threshold for EU countries to register third-counattempt arrivals was set at only 10%. From 9 January, this increased to 35%, with the system launching at dozens more airports and ports.

The scale-up of the biometric technology has already experienced teething problems, caapplying significant delays for air passengers.

In some cases, delays have resulted in passengers missing their flights.

A report published at the finish of last year from Airport Council International (ACI) Europe found that the progressive rollout of the biometric system has resulted in border control processing times at airports increasing by up to 70%, with waiting times of up to three hours in peak traffic periods.

In December, Lisbon Airport was forced to suspfinish the EES for three months after “serious deficiencies” at border control resulted in excessive waiting times, which reportedly reached seven hours.

Will EES lead to summer travel chaos?

As of 10 April 2026, member states are required to have EES technology implemented at all border crossings and to register all third-party nationals entering the counattempt.

However, after this date, member states will still be able to partially suspfinish EES operations where necessary during an additional 90-day period with a possible 60-day extension if fewer than 80% of EES records taken before full rollout contained biometric data.

“Rolling out such a large-scale system is a complex tquestion,” European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert stated at a press briefing on 30 January.

“By extfinishing the flexibility for the summer period, we give Member States the tools necessary to manage potential problems and, most importantly, avoid summer travel chaos.”

The decision means member states have greater flexibility to manage the transition to biometric data collection based on how their transport hubs are coping.

For travellers, this means you may still receive your passport manually stamped at borders over the next few months.

French airports request suspension of EES rollout over summer

Aéroports de Paris (ADP), which manages both Paris Orly and Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airports in France, is the latest to warn against the EES scale-up over the summer.

The group is calling for a suspension of the rollout during peak travel periods from June to August.

Increasing border checks before autumn would be “extremely risky”, ADP Deputy CEO Justine Coutard stated during a recent press conference, as reported in French news site The Connexion.

She suggested that the two French airports had only introduced “limited” EES trials so far, which have already posed difficulties despite not processing the volumes of passengers expected in summer.

“As soon as we see that there are excessive wait times, that it is not working well, we switch back [to manual procedures] so as not to caapply any disruption to our systems,” she stated.

“We remain very much in favour of a gradual approach… and to be frank, we would not be opposed to implementation being postponed until after the summer of 2026,” she added.

Airlines warn of ‘five-to-six-hour’ queues this summer

The relocate comes after ACI Europe’s criticism of the “significant discomfort… being inflicted upon travellers”.

In December, Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI Europe, cautioned that the expanding rollout “will inevitably result in much more severe congestion and systemic disruption for airports and airlines”.

He warned that this could result in “serious safety hazards”.

Jankovec recently informed the BBC that being able to paapply the EES would be vital this summer if “the situation becomes unsustainable at border control”.

Without that flexibility, and if problems related to technology and border guard numbers didn’t improve, he warned of five-to-six-hour delays.

In February, European airline organisations called for “critical issues” responsible for existing delays to be urgently resolved.

“Failing immediate action to provide sufficient flexibility, severe disruptions over the peak summer months are a real prospect, with queues potentially reaching four hours or more,” stated a joint letter by ACI Europe, Airlines for Europe (A4E) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

They declare immediate action is required to combat “chronic border control understaffing” and “unresolved technology issues”.

The associations requested confirmation from the European Commission as to whether Schengen countries would be able to partially or fully suspfinish the EES until October.

In January, travel trade association ABTA urged greater apply of contingency measures by EU border officials to facilitate the scale-up.

“We are urging border authorities to do all they can to minimise delays. They have contingency measures at their disposal – such as standing down the system or limiting checks – and we want them to be utilised to assist manage the flow of people,” stated Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA.

“Where problems have been experienced so far, some of these could have been avoided if the contingency measures were applied.”
