European Commission Urges US to Uphold Trade Commitments
Brussels, February 22 (QNA) – The European Commission has urged the United States to abide by its trade commitments with the European Union following a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down key elements of US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy and his subsequent announcement of new temporary tariffs.
In a statement, the Commission stressed that existing agreements between the two sides must be respected, emphasizing that the transatlantic trade relationship — one of the largest in the world — requires predictability and adherence to commitments outlined in the joint EU-US declaration reached last year.
The Commission also called for “full clarification” of the measures Washington intfinishs to take after the court decision, warning that uncertainty surrounding tariff policy risks disrupting global markets and undermining confidence in transatlantic trade.
The US Supreme Court ruling invalidated significant parts of Trump’s previous tariff program, prompting the administration to introduce new temporary across-the-board tariffs initially set at 10% and later increased to 15%, the maximum rate permitted under the relevant trade law provisions.
The developments have raised questions about the future implementation of the EU-US trade framework agreed in 2025, which established a 15% ceiling on tariffs applied to most European exports to the United States and included reciprocal market-access arrangements between the two sides.
The European Parliament had been preparing to vote on ratifying the agreement in the coming days, although some lawbuildrs have called for delaying the process amid concerns over recent US trade measures and legal uncertainty surrounding tariff policies.
