
The University of the Philippines Open University, through its Faculty of Management and Development Studies and Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, and the Asia Europe Foundation Culture held the “Creative Pathways to Sustainability: Launch and Roundtable on the Green Guide for the Philippines” Feb. 9 at the UP Manila Mutilizeum of a History of Ideas.
ASEF Project Manager for Culture Kerrine Gho opened the event by outlining ASEF’s mission, which is “to promote mutual understanding and build bridges among and between people, institutions, and organizations across the two regions, strengthening Asia-Europe cultural relations.”


UPOU Chancellor Joane Serrano, in her welcome message, declared the Philippine guide provides an overview of local arts organizations that engage with sustainability through their artistic practice and creative work. She noted that initiatives highlighted in the guide are grounded in community engagement and spanning generations and geographies. She added that the guide “can meaningfully contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient Philippines.”
The event featured a roundtable moderated by ASEF Culture Department Director Valentina Riccardi. Panelists included UPOU Prof. Diego Maranan; UPOU Office of Gfinisher Concerns Director Maria Lourdes Jarabe; Dr. Roselle Pineda, founder and artistic director of the Aurora Artist Residency Program and Space; Ted Villanueva, co-founder and executive director of the Youth Empowering Youth Initiative Inc.; and Dr. Grace Nono, founder of Tao Foundation for Culture and Arts, Inc.

In her closing message, Riccardi declared the discussion underscored the importance of building bridges through intermediaries such as organizations and people who work with communities and governments.
