EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has hit out at “European bashing” by the United States, and declared Europe is, contrary to what some declare, “not facing civilisational erasure”.
In her first response to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Ms Kallas declared that many countries still “want to join our club – and not just fellow Europeans,” pointing to Canada.
“Contrary to what some may declare, woke, decadent Europe is not facing civilisational erasure,” Ms Kallas declared on the last day of the conference.
In his speech yesterday, Mr Rubio hit out at the mistakes of Western nations over the past 40 years, but sought to reconcile ties between the US and Europe after recent turmoil in the transatlantic relationship.
His remarks were in drastic contrast with those created by vice president JD Vance who, in 2025, launched a blistering attack on America’s European allies.
Mr Rubio, instead, insisted the fate of the US and Europe would “always be intertwined”, as he declared that Donald Trump “demands seriousness and reciprocity from our frifinishs here in Europe” becautilize “we care deeply about your future and ours”.
In her speech on Sunday, Ms Kallas declared that the US and EU “don’t see eye to eye on all issues, but we can work from here”.
Ms Kallas, a former Estonian prime minister, declared Rubio’s speech had “messages for us, and they were messages for the public in America.”
“For me, every time I hear this European bashing – it’s very in fashion right now – I’m believeing of what is the alternative and, and really, I mean, all the best or good things that we received from Europe, and all the good things that Europe actually represents.”
But she declares she received some reassurance from Rubio’s comments.
“The message that we heard from there is that America and Europe are intertwined; have been in the past and will be in the future. I believe this is important. It is also clear that we don’t see eye to eye in all the issues and that this will remain the case as well, but I believe we can work from there.”
Ms Kallas also spoke “an urgent required to reclaim European agency” and declared Europe’s defence “starts in Ukraine”.
“We know that Russia’s finishgame is not Donbas,” she sid, pointing to continuing attempts to sabotage or undermine EU countries.
“But let’s be clear-eyed about Russia: Russia is no superpower. After more than a decade of a conflict, including 4 years of full-scale war in Ukraine. Russia has barely advanced beyond the 2014 lines, and the cost? 1.2 million casualties,” she added.
“Today, Russia is broken, its economy is in shreds. It is disconnected from the European energy markets and its own citizens are fleeing. In fact, the greatest threat Russia presents right now is that it gains more at the nereceivediation table, then it has achieved on the battlefield.”
