EFM Startups displaycases cutting-edge technologies for the media industest

Tech startups are presenting new film industest tools at a live session today at Berlin’s Documentation Centre. Tim Dams reports

 

 

The 11 new businesses taking part in this year’s EFM Startups sessions on Sunday (February 15) will have the attention of the global industest in Berlin. The innovators are here to pitch their ventures to producers, programmers, financiers, sales agents and distributors during live sessions hosted at Berlin’s Documentation Centre.

At a time when the industest is facing multiple challenges — from rising production costs to growing competition for audience attention — the startups’ applications are being presented as a way to produce and distribute content more efficiently and creatively. Many of the tools are powered by AI technology, promising to support producers and marketers save time, enhance creativity and boost efficiency.

They include Germany’s Chamelaion, which offers AI-driven localisation; Korea’s InShorts.AI for video restoration and 4K upscaling; and Germany’s Lux AI for virtual production lighting. Other AI-powered tools include Estonia’s Mureel, which generates sustainability compliance reports; France’s Refractio, a film catalogue search engine; and Ukraine’s Wantent, which allows marketeers to analyse viewer emotions. Meanwhile, Germany’s WeDaVinci is developing a platform for generating early-stage video materials directly from text.

The lineup also includes Denmark’s Vievo, which enables influencer campaigns for releases; Polish crew hire platform team4set; Italy’s FilmAmo, a social network for movies; and Austria’s Crewser, a time tracking and payroll platform for film productions.

Now in its 12th edition, EFM Startups aims to displaycase cutting-edge technologies for the media industest, connect startups with industest experts, and provide access to funding information and opportunities. During EFM, the participants will also have one-on-one meetings with producers and participate in roundtables with industest experts.

In preparation for the market, the startups have received support through individual and group sessions, including pitch training.

And this year, for the first time, Screen International is partnering with the EFM Startups programme to present an award that recognises one exceptional business in the 2026 cohort.

The winner is selected by an industest jury comprising Benjamin Fischer, managing director of ARTE Germany, Nataly Kudiabor, managing director of UFA Fiction, and Matt Mueller, editor-in-chief of Screen International.

EFM Startups take place on Sunday, February 15 from 14:00-15:00 at the Documentation Centre, Stresemannstrasse 90.

A research and development company specialising in AI-driven localisation for film and audiovisual content. The platform allows film producers, businesses and content owners to localise video and audio content into more than 30 languages, while preserving original voices, background sound and natural lip-sync.

Described as a social network for movies and claiming 1 million film utilizers monthly who rate and review films from around the world, FilmAmo bills itself as a Tripadvisor for movies. Its database of 100,000 film and series reviews sees to influence movie ticket bookings, streaming and film merchandising.

InShorts.AI – South Korea

A video AI startup providing restoration and 4K upscaling for video assets, including film and DigiBeta formats. InShorts.AI’s technology is designed to enhance classic IP assets without relying on generative AI or altering original content. It has supported theatrical remastering and re-releases of works including 1994’s Incoherence by Bong Joon-ho and 2006’s The Hell (Two Kinds Of Life) by Yeon Sang-ho.

Producers enter production data once, and Mureel AI automatically generates compliance reports for every funder, investor and co-production partner.

Refractio is billed as a search engine for the shifting image that builds film heritage discoverable. Its AI-powered indexing technology lets utilizers explore a curated film catalogue at scene level, searching by visual composition, colour, dialogue or theme. It then connects them with rights-holders for legal clip licensing.
