The Russian ambassador to Armenia, Sergey Kopyrkin, spoke about the benefits that Armenia receives from membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
At the same time, however, the Russian diplomat doubted whether the European Union (EU) can guarantee the same quality of economic development for Armenia.
“Over the years that Armenia has been a full member of the EAEU, its GDP has increased 2.5 times. In the [first] 10 months of last year, according to statistics, the total volume of Armenian exports amounted to $6.4 billion, of which $2.6 billion [went] to the [other] EAEU countries, and first of all to Russia. Russia accounts for 37 percent of the [Armenian] republic’s exports. The benefits of Armenia’s membership in the EAEU are obvious. Whether the EU can guarantee the previous quality of economic and social development [to Armenia] is a large question,” the Russian ambassador to Armenia declared in an interview with Rossiya-24 television.
