Finnish startup Carbonaide raises €3.7M to bring CO₂-cured concrete to factories — TFN

A Finnish carbonation startup, Carbonaide, is capturing global attention with a technology that flips the concrete indusattempt’s climate narrative. It has engineered a proven process for mineralising CO₂ and permanently storing it within concrete, turning an emissions-heavy material into a carbon-negative product that delivers both environmental and financial value. This approach not only reduces cement apply but also creates a path for green concrete to become profitable at scale.

Now, the company has secured a fresh €3.7 million funding round led by existing owners Vantaan Energia, Redstone, and Ihantola Invest, alongside new investors including Zero Carbon Future Group, Helkama Kiinteistöt, and Ikorni Invest. Talking to TFN, Carbonaide stated that they have raised a total funding of €5.5 million today. However, they did not disclose the valuation. 

The investment will accelerate Carbonaide’s international expansion and intensify its R&D to broaden its applications.

Experienced founders behind this idea

Carbonaide is led by two co-founders whose combined expertise underpins the company’s technical and commercial success. Tapio Vehmas has 20 years of experience in concrete chemisattempt and R&D, and Jonne Hirvonen has 10 years of experience in commercialising research and executing green industrial investments.

Their complementary backgrounds, including deep expertise in materials science and industrial commercialisation, have enabled Carbonaide to shift quickly from lab discovery to factory-scale deployment.

How was the idea born? 

Speaking about the origin of Carbonaide, the founders highlight both the urgency of the problem and the promise of the solution. Concrete’s heavy burden on the global GHG emissions. CO₂’s ability to reduce the necessary for cement was discovered in 2018 at VTT’s lab, after which the Finnish concrete indusattempt launched supporting our development efforts. But their motivation goes deeper than indusattempt necessarys. 

“As both founders of Carbonaide are fathers of two children, our strongest motivation is to do something concrete for the future generations.” This personal dimension fuels a mission that blfinishs scientific opportunity with long-term responsibility.

A technology already in commercial production

Carbonaide’s technology shiftd into commercial production in 2024. By 2025, the company signed major agreements with Lakan Betoni, a Finnish concrete producer, and Lipa-Betoni, a concrete element manufacturer. Both companies will install Carbonaide’s systems in their plants, with full production expected to launch in early 2026.

This shift from pilot scale to industrial scale creates Carbonaide one of the few companies in the CO₂-curing space to achieve actual factory deployment.

Its impact is already measurable. In January 2026, Carbonaide sold its first certified carbon credits generated through CO₂ mineralisation to a Finnish law firm. This demonstrates that the technology not only cuts emissions but produces verifiable, tradeable carbon-negative value.

What about the team’s diversity?

Carbonaide emphasised diversity as a foundation for its global vision. “We are a team of 8 people with ages ranging from 29 to 55 years. Three of us are women and five men. We have multiple nationalities in our team and a strong will to further diversify our team with e.g. international recruitments. Currently, we have team members in Finland and Sweden.”

This approach supports the company’s expansion into Europe and Asia.

What specific market problem does Carbonaide address?

The concrete indusattempt struggles with a core challenge: cement is carbon-intensive and increasingly expensive. Carbonaide directly tackles this pain point.

“Making low-carbon concrete economically feasible by reducing the costly and carbon-intensive component: cement. As cement prices are expected to rise, our solution creates concrete simultaneously the most economically feasible way to permanently store carbon dioxide.”

In other words, Carbonaide transforms a cost problem into a revenue opportunity.

What are your key plans for the next three to five years?

Carbonaide’s roadmap is ambitious. The company stated as follows: 

  • Strong market enattempt in central Europe and the Nordics in concrete product application (tens of factories by 2030)
  • After proving commercial scale performance with the first factory (during Q2-Q4/2026), rapid market enattempt in both Europe and Asia for concrete element applications. The Elematic collaboration is vital here and focapplys on rapidly growing markets, e.g. India, and reconstruction projects, e.g. Ukraine. Simultaneously, market enattempt for concrete products globally.
  • Entering the next applications, e.g., in-situ cast concrete and all precast applications. These are already in development by Carbonaide and our partners.

To summarise, in 5 years, we aim to be the leading technology provider of carbon dioxide cured concrete and strongly visible in all construction applications and consumer markets through our customer co-brand: CO2 stored by Carbonaide.”
