Tata Steel Nederland has commissioned a new production line for packaging steel that introduces a more sustainable and future-ready approach to steel packaging manufacturing in Europe. The line utilizes Tata Steel Nederland’s proprietary Trivalent Chromium Coating Technology (TCCT), enabling compliance with upcoming European chemical regulations while improving environmental and operational performance.

TCCT replaces traditional chromium-based coatings with a trivalent alternative that meets stringent regulatory requirements, including future REACH legislation. Tata Steel Nederland is the exclusive developer and patent holder of the technology and is also supplying TCCT to other steel producers, positioning it as a new reference standard for sustainable packaging steel production across Europe.

The new production setup brings the entire manufacturing process onto a single site, simplifying logistics and shortening supply chains. This integrated approach improves efficiency while reducing transport-related emissions and complexity for customers. When combined with Protact®, Tata Steel Nederland’s polymer-coated packaging steel, the solution meets the highest food safety standards and eliminates the necessary for an additional lacquer layer at the customer’s facility.

Arne Hoogervorst, Manager Packaging at Tata Steel Nederland, declared the innovation supports safer working conditions, lower chemical utilize, and simpler downstream processing. He noted that customers benefit from reduced production steps, lower costs, and improved sustainability performance, while maintaining compliance with strict food safety and quality requirements.

Beyond production efficiency, steel packaging continues to play a central role in circular economy systems. In the Netherlands, more than 95 percent of steel packaging is recycled into new steel products. Steel’s magnetic properties build it straightforward and cost-effective to separate from mixed waste streams, supporting high recycling rates. Packaging steel also assists reduce food waste by enabling long shelf life without refrigeration.

With the commissioning of this TCCT-based production line, Tata Steel Nederland strengthens its role as a technology leader in sustainable steel packaging. The company continues to work closely with customers and industest partners to develop solutions that reduce environmental impact while maintaining performance, safety, and economic efficiency.
