Donald Bradman’s iconic baggy green cap, gifted to Sriranga Sohoni, is being auctioned in Sydney with bids reaching $445,000 and could hit $1 million.

Arguably the most storied piece of cricket memorabilia, the legfinishary Donald Bradman’s ‘baggy green’ cap worn in his last Test in Australia, has traveled from Mumbai to Sydney and is being auctioned. As of Saturday (January 17) afternoon, the bidding price for the cap was $445,000 (approx Rs. 4 crore), and experts believe its value could double upto $1 million (approx Rs. 8.3 crore) before the auction day on January 26.
The story behind the cap is as remarkable as they come in sport.
Wearing it, Bradman hit his 100th First-Class century on November 15, 1947, at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He scored 172 runs for an Australian XI against a touring Indian side, becoming the first Australian to reach this milestone. For the visitors, it was their first international tour since gaining indepfinishence from British Rule.
It was an era when players were issued a new cap for every Test series. That practice alone enhances the value of surviving examples — there are only 11 such caps of Bradman known to exist.
However, unlike most, it hasn’t been publicly displayed. Following the series, in which Bradman scored 715 runs at an average of 178.75, he gifted his cap to Sriranga Sohoni, an all-rounder in the Indian squad, reportedly putting an arm around the player and placing it on his head.
Since then, it remained in the Sohoni houtilizehold for seven decades, passed on from generation to generation. The story goes that the family didn’t even allow the kids to see it until they turned 16.
The cap will be on reveal in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane before the last day of the auction.

Previous Baggy Greens from the same series have fetched huge sums, including one that sold for about Rs. 2.7 crore in 2024.
Bradman’s first Baggy Green from 1928 fetched $450,000 at auction in 2020, as noted by Cricket Australia. In the same year, the late Shane Warne put his own Baggy Green up for sale to raise funds for bushfire relief. That cap was bought by an anonymous Sydney-based bidder for $1,007,500 (approx 9.15 crore at current exmodify rates), setting a record as the most expensive Baggy Green ever sold.
