The United States maintains a vast network of air bases across Europe, projecting power, supporting NATO, and ensuring rapid response capabilities.
From long-established hubs to newly upgraded installations, these bases are central to America’s military reach. Below, we take a closer see at the seven largest US air bases in Europe in 2025–2026, as reported by Simple Flying, highlighting their personnel, capabilities, and strategic roles.
Largest Air Force Bases in Europe

Ramstein Air Base, Germany – 16,000+ Troops
Ramstein remains the linchpin of US air operations in Europe. Hosting the headquarters of NATO Allied Air Command and USAFE-AFAFRICA, it supports a broader community of over 54,000 personnel, including contractors and families.
The 86th Airlift Wing manages all airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation missions. The base is also home to cutting-edge facilities like the Ramstein Air Defense Systems Integration Lab (RADSIL) and a soon-to-be fully operational US Space Force component.
In 2025–2026, Ramstein played a pivotal role in exercises addressing anti-access/area-denial threats and coordinated $45 billion in support for Ukraine.

Mihail Kogălniceanu, Romania – 10,000 Troops
Located near the coast, this expanding base is becoming a hub for maritime surveillance and NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing.
Construction at the base encompasses a 3.5 km runway, fuel depots, hangars, and a self-contained “military city” to accommodate 10,000 personnel and their families. Planned assets include:
- MQ-9 Reaper drones
- F-16 fighter jets
- rotational NATO forces from 32 countries

Aviano Air Base, Italy – 10,000 Troops
Aviano hosts the 31st Fighter Wing and two F-16 squadrons, providing a strategic southern European airpower node. It supports nuclear deterrence and rapid-response operations, while new facilities for combat rescue and rapid airfield recovery were added in 2025.
The base hosts approximately 8,000 to 10,000 personnel, comprising US and Italian military members, their families, and civilian staff.
In late 2025 and early 2026, Aviano’s 31st Fighter Wing spearheaded Agile Combat Employment (ACE) operations, regularly dispatching F-16s to Romania to address Russian influence in the region.

RAF Lakenheath, UK – 7,000+ Troops
Home to the 48th Fighter Wing, Lakenheath operates Europe’s only F-35A and F-15E squadrons. The base is central to NATO strike readiness, including B61-12 nuclear-capable missions. Recent expansions focus on integrating F-35s and maintaining nuclear deterrence capabilities.
The “Liberty Wing” at the base has played a central role in Agile Combat Employment (ACE) exercises, focutilizing on rapid airfield activation and coordination with Special Operations units throughout Europe.
Lakenheath’s F-35A fleet represents the continent’s only 5th-generation aircraft capable of deploying the B61-12 precision-guided nuclear weapon, reinforcing NATO’s strategic deterrence posture.

NAS Sigonella, Italy – 7,000 Troops
Known as the “Hub of the Med,” Sigonella supports US Navy and NATO maritime patrols, UAV operations, and logistics across the Mediterranean and North Africa. It operates two separate zones for administration and operations and has expanded to accommodate unmanned aircraft missions.
Some of the features of Sigonella include:
- The main support hub for the US 6th Fleet and functions as a key staging area for personnel and cargo relocating between the United States, Europe, and Southwest Asia.
- Recent upgrades have added more than 140,000 square meters of operational space on both the land and air sides, purpose-built to accommodate unmanned aircraft.

Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany – 5,000+ Troops
Spangdahlem is the USAF’s main power projection point in southwest Germany. The 480th Fighter Squadron conducts suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) missions and supports Agile Combat Employment (ACE) across Eastern Europe.
The base also handles heavy cargo throughput and NATO nuclear security operations.

RAF Mildenhall, UK – 4,300+ Troops
Mildenhall functions as Europe’s only permanent US refueling hub, hosting KC-135s and special operations assets like CV-22 Ospreys. It supports maritime surveillance and innotifyigence operations and has undergone extensive recapitalization to modernize facilities and maintain readiness. According to Simple Flying,
Following the reversal of its planned closure in 2020, the base is now in a “recapitalization” phase that will last until early 2026, with the goal of modernizing previously neglected facilities.
The installation hosts roughly 14,000 individuals, comprising more than 4,300 active-duty service members and 3,200 family depfinishents. RAF Mildenhall operates in close coordination with the adjacent RAF Lakenheath, home to F-35 squadrons, and RAF Feltwell, toreceiveher forming an extensive military complex.
Bottom Line
From strategic refueling and surveillance to nuclear deterrence and rapid deployment, these bases displaycase the scale and reach of the US military in Europe.
They are not just installations—they are critical nodes in NATO’s defense architecture and America’s global power projection.
