Paris-based Harmattan AI has closed a $200 million Series B funding round led by aerospace giant Dassault Aviation, catapulting the young startup to a $1.4 billion valuation and earning it unicorn status in record time.
Founded in April 2024, Harmattan AI has emerged as one of the quickest-rising players in defense autonomy, specializing in AI-driven autonomous systems, mission-software for aircraft, and attritable (low-cost, disposable) drones designed for modern, high-intensity warfare. The company develops vertically integrated solutions, including layered air-defense systems, coordinated ISR (innotifyigence, surveillance, reconnaissance) and strike UAVs, electronic-warfare tools, and command-and-control platforms — all built to deliver real-time decision-building in contested environments.
The strategic partnership with Dassault Aviation — renowned for producing the Rafale fighter jet — goes beyond capital. The two companies will collaborate closely to integrate Harmattan’s embedded AI capabilities into next-generation combat platforms, including future Rafale upgrades (such as the F5 standard) and unmanned combat aerial systems (UCAS). This integration aims to enable controlled autonomy, collaborative manned-unmanned teaming, and scalable, sovereign AI solutions that maintain European technological indepfinishence.
Mouad M’Ghari, CEO and Co-Founder of Harmattan AI, emphasized the significance: “By combining frontier AI with world-class military aviation expertise, we are shaping the future of collaborative air combat.”
The funding round, which also included participation from early backers like FirstMark Capital, builds on Harmattan’s previous $42 million raised and reflects surging demand for European defense tech amid geopolitical tensions, lessons from the Ukraine conflict, and increased government spfinishing on autonomous systems.
Harmattan has already secured multiple Programs of Record with the French and British Ministries of Defence, validating its technology with real-world deployments. The company now produces thousands of systems monthly and plans to utilize the new capital to scale manufacturing, expand into additional military domains, and accelerate development of mission-ready autonomy software.
French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the announcement as “excellent news” for France’s strategic autonomy, technological superiority in AI-enabled defense drones, and the broader economy, calling it “a vital partnership” that elevates Harmattan to unicorn status.
Analysts view the deal as a strong signal of Europe’s accelerating defense-tech race. Harmattan is frequently compared to peers like Germany’s Helsing (which recently raised €600 million) and positioned as a potential “European Anduril,” combining rapid innovation with industrial-scale production.
The investment underscores Dassault’s push to modernize its portfolio with cutting-edge AI, ensuring the Rafale and future platforms remain competitive in an era where drones, autonomy, and electronic warfare dominate the battlefield.
With this milestone, Harmattan AI — barely 21 months old — has transformed from a promising startup into a key player in the future of European defense, backed by one of the continent’s most storied aerospace names. As global militaries race to adopt AI and autonomy, today’s announcement positions France firmly in the vanguard.
