The spokesperson for the European Commission has reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to upholding the principles of national sovereignty, according to a statement reported by Reuters. The spokesperson called on international partners to respect these principles, emphasizing that the EU stands firmly behind Denmark.
This statement comes in response to recent developments involving United States President Donald Trump, who has renewed interest in acquiring Greenland. These remarks follow the United States’ recent actions in Venezuela, including the detention of President Nicolás Maduro. In light of these events, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged the United States to cease creating threats.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has previously been the subject of interest from the United States regarding potential acquisition. The EU’s comments highlight ongoing support for Denmark’s sovereignty amid these renewed discussions.
