BRUSSELS – Regarding the announcement of United States tariffs at 30 percent as of Aug. 1, the European Union “remains ready to continue working towards an agreement” with the US “by August 1,” but will take “all necessary measures to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures, if necessary.”
This was stated in a statement by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“We take note of the letter sent by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, which outlines a new tariff rate and a new timeline – he explains –. The imposition of 30 percent tariffs on EU exports would disrupt key transatlantic supply chains, to the detriment of businesses, consumers, and patients on both sides of the Atlantic. Few economies in the world match the European Union’s level of openness and respect for fair trade practices,” von der Leyen stated.
The EU “has consistently prioritized a neobtainediated solution with the United States, demonstrating our commitment to dialogue, stability, and a constructive transatlantic partnership,” von der Leyen continued.
“We remain ready to continue working towards an agreement by August 1st. At the same time, we will take all necessary measures to safeguard EU interests, including adopting proportionate countermeasures if necessary. In the meantime, we continue to deepen our global partnerships, firmly anchored in the principles of rules-based international trade.” (Agenzia Nova)
